Heavy Hitters Kicks Off With a Splash

Heavy thunderstorms couldn’t wash-out the “Heavy Hitters” street art exhibit opening last Friday at the Decatur Area Arts Council. Although it rained buckets at the beginning of this three hour event, eventually the sky cleared, the temps cooled, and the crowds came out.

The main “Heavy Hitters” exhibit, curated by Springfield, IL based artist Burn353, features work by an international group of graffiti/street/comic & pop artists. Some dark, some humorous, some familiar characters, and many pieces that just made me go “Wow, how in the hell did they come up with that?”.

The third floor gallery features area artists: Zac Atkinson, Nick Beery, Alec Goss, Shani Goss, Jon Griffin, Lee Larkins, John McDevitt, & Shane Thompson – plus, on opening night, live music by Springfield based “Texas Trucker Speed Fiends”.

That wasn’t all that the night had to offer. For the Blue Connection’s “That’s How We Roll” event, Millikin University student artists took to the street to make large monotype art prints using a steamroller.

The exhibit will be up through September. It is definitely worth a trip downtown to check this show out.

Don’t forget to visit the third floor!
